Bug in Android phone triggers reboot with 8 keystrokes

android t mobile g1 Bug in Android phone triggers reboot with 8 keystrokes
Bugs in anything are often annoying things, and rarely amusing. The recently released Android G1 phone wasn’t free of such (being a first-gen device), but I’m not quite sure whether I should file it under annoying or amusing.

A newly discovered bug in its software apparently makes each and every word typed on its keyboard “silently and invisibly interpreted as a command and executed with superuser privileges.” Put simply, this means that any user might unknowingly issue and execute commands before he or she even knows it. Might seem pretty lowbrow at first, but such a bug could actually result in a lot of backfiring. Such as when a user types in the word “,” which automatically makes the phone –no questions asked.
Go ahead, try it (if you’ve got a real phone, and not just an emulator). Type in the word “.” Yep, every single , the eight of it. “-r-e-b-o-o-t-” Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

A report regarding the said bug has already been filed in the Android pages of Google Code, and here I’ve pasted an excerpt below:

“I was in the middle of a text conversation with my girl when she asked why I hadn’t responded. I had just rebooted my phone and the first thing I typed was a response to her text which simply stated “” – which, to my surprise, rebooted my phone.”

While the story of how this bug was discovered is funny, for some users the effect could be anything but. Imagine you were working on or doing something really important on your Android G1, and this happened. Woe to all the data you will have lost. And you.

Fortunately, this bug only seems to affect phones with firmware version 1.0 TC4-RC29 and earlier. So any phone that has received the latest firmware update pushed over-the-air by Google should be immune to it. Some users are also reporting that it only works for them while the USB cable is plugged in and the phone is in debug mode. In any case, this is definitely not supposed to be a feature, so it would probably be best if Google or T-Mobile worked to fix it pronto.

The website 148apps.com has reported that 10,000 applications have now been released to the general iPhone and iPod Touch-loving public within the App Store.

In a cool touch, the site has also created this tribute page that shows a micro-icon for every application available in the store. On this page you’ll also find some interesting statistics concerning new submissions by month, app count by price, and app count by category. It was no surprise to me when I took a closer look at this page that the Games category was far and away the most popular, with 2,319 apps. The Entertainment and Utilities categories are next in line, with 1,109 and 1,009 apps available respectively.

Some other interesting tidbits to note… Roughly 24% of apps are free, 35% cost $.99, and the average cost of apps within the store is $3.12. What a cash-cow for Apple… and the developers. But mostly Apple icon smile Apple Stuffs 10,000 Apps into the iPhone App Store

Well done to Apple and all of the very out there that have been working very hard on some fantastic (OK, and some are not very fantastic) apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch. I wonder how long it will take to hit 20,000 apps? 100,000 apps? Should be interesting to see where we sit at the same time next year.

Note: 148apps.com is so named because you can add up to 148 apps to your iPhone or iPod Touch. That’d be a lot of screens to swipe through, no?

Samsung has always been prolific when it comes to low-end phones, so it’s no surprise that, today, two new basic handsets that bear the South Korean manufacturer’s brand have surfaced.

I’m talking about Samsung E1410 and Samsung E1117, both of which are candybars that will probably be successful in markets like India, China and Russia.

Neither of the new phones has a photo camera or an MP3 player, so I guess that Samsung will be selling them for less than $100 each.

What’s nice about the E1410 is that its 1000 mAh battery is said to last up to 11.5 hours in talk-time mode, or up to 546 hours in standby mode.

Other than that, the known specs of Samsung E1410 include:

*
Dual band GSM connectivity (900 / 1800 MHz) with GPRS
*
1.63 inch CSTN display with 128 x 128 and
*
4MB of internal memory
*
108 x 46 x 15.3 mm

The features of Samsung E1117 are somehow similar:

*
Dual band GSM connectivity (900 / 1800 MHz) with EDGE
*
1.63 inch CSTN display with 128 x 128 and
*
FM radio
*
900 Kb of internal memory
79 grams
*
106.4 x 45 x 15.4 mm
And a 1000 mAh battery that might have talk and standby times similar to the ones of Samsung E1410’s battery

Samsung gave no details about the release of E1410 and E1117, but the phones will probably be available in the next few months.

Japan’s KDDI adds Sony Ericsson Walkman Xmini; World’s smallest Walkman phone?

se xmini Japan’s KDDI adds Sony Ericsson Walkman Xmini; World’s smallest Walkman phone?

Usually we see ultra hi-end handsets hitting portfolios of Japanese mobile operators and seeing the tiny Sony Ericsson Walkman Xmini hitting KDDI’s offering came as a surprise. It’s far from being a Japan-only ultimate handset with 8 megapixel camera and WVGA screen. Rather it’s a simplistic music-centric phone that seems designed for those that want to combine their Walkman MP3 player with a regular feature phone, but don’t like the bulkiness factor. That being said, the tiny Walkman Xmini sports a QVGA (320×240 ) screen, 4GB of on-board memory and dedicated music control keys. It measures 75×44×18 mm and it’s available in multiple colors to appeal to broader audience…

And that’s about all we can tell about the Xmini. We like it – in one sense, it’s like the Nintendo Wii of mobile phones. It’s not the features where the Xmini competes, but the overall concept. Any thoughts?
