Colorware Adds Visual Spice to iPods, Better Scratch Protection For iPod Tou…

We’ve covered Colorware's professional gadget painting in the past—and were more than satisfied after seeing their work close up, but their latest iPod coloring seems to be more than just cosmetic. The iPod Nano 2G color-coats the shiny silver metallic back with a color layer, which most likely handles fingerprints and scratches better than the original surface. They also paint iPod Nano 4G and iPod Classic as well as iPhone 3G, so you’ve got options on those devices as well. The process is not all that cheap ($125 to send yours in), but it’s definitely worth it considering that they do a great job and you’ll be using these gadgets for years.

Samsung T*Omnia announced in Korea; Better screen and mobile TV included in …

The improved Samsung Omnia isn’t a Japanese thing any more. The Korean electronics giant is bringing the same device to the home market under the name “T*Omnia.”
As with the Japanese version, this Omnia will also come with a better 3.3-inch WVGA (480×800 pixels) touchscreen and a mobile TV receiver. However, for the Korean market it’s satellite DMB rather than one-seg receiver that is used in Japan.
Korean SK Telecom will be selling device in two flavors: SCH-M490 with 4GB and SCH-M495 with 16GB of internal memory.
Rest of the specs are unchanged and include 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus and image stabilizer, WiFi, GPS, HSDPA, and Bluetooth support. Windows Mobile 6.1 with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI is running the show.
Now Samsung if you could bring this baby to Europe and North America, we would love you. Forget mobile TV, we don’t need that at the moment, or at least prepare two Omnias: one with and the other one without mobile TV receiver. That would work!

Nokia E63 caught in the wild

Nokia is preparing to launch yet another QWERTY keyboard equipped smartphone a la E71. Apparently, the model’s name has been set to E63 and from the bare number we conclude its older brother [E71] is a better device. However, that doesn’t mean E63 sucks, quite the contrary.
Here’s what we know, or at least think we know about the E63:
- GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio as well as UMTS/HSDPA support
- Bluetooth, WiFi
- QVGA screen (320×240 pixels)
- Camera: At least 2 megapixels. No Front Camera.
- Symbian 9.2 with S60 Feature Pack 1 (like the E71)
- Standard 3.5 mm audio jack (E71 has a 2.5 mm jack)
- Thicker than the E71
- Flashlight function
- Non-metal construction (unlike the E71)
- No side buttons
- Three versions will be available: E63-1 for Europe, E63-2 without a camera and more memory, and E63-3 for the Americas.
There’s certainly a room for a device like the E71 without a camera for government employees and I did wonder when we’ll see it released…

Telestial, the largest online travel communications retailer, announces the launch of the Telestial dual-number Passport Roaming SIM, with U.S. and U.K. global cell phone service all in one. The service provides a U.S. and U.K. number, where both numbers are active simultaneously. The traveler can be called at any time on either the U.S. +1 number or the U.K. +44 number and will also receive text messages on either number. The dual-number Passport SIM provides two mobile services, with two numbers with the ease of a single, prepaid account balance. The dual-number SIM means that customers who’d like a U.S. and international number no longer need to carry two phones, or one phone and multiple SIM cards. The dual-number Passport SIM is prepaid and works in over 130 countries around the world. Compared to costly international roaming rates that range from $1-5 USD per minute depending on the traveler’s location, the new Telestial dual-number Passport SIM provides customers low calling rates overseas. |
New Telestial Dual-Number SIM Features Include:
- Calls made from the dual-number SIM: From $0.49 USD per minute
- Incoming calls made to the U.K. number: Free in over 50 countries (including the United States and Canada)
- Incoming calls made to the U.S. number: $0.19 USD per minute
- Text messages made from the dual-number SIM: $0.69 USD
- Text messages received to U.K. number: Free
- Text messages received to U.S. number: $0.10 USD
When customers travel overseas, they can provide friends, family and colleagues with a U.S. number to reach them at anytime, saving them from having to make expensive international calls. For international contacts, either the U.S. or the U.K. number can be distributed. Business travelers can correspond with their international colleagues as well as their American colleagues without switching phones and frequent leisure travelers have the added simplicity of only needing one phone.
The service also provides significant savings for international travelers coming to the U.S. Instead of paying an average of $1.50 USD per minute for all calls made in the United States, international travelers coming to the U.S. will benefit from much lower outgoing costs of $0.49 USD and incoming costs of $0.19 USD.
Telestial Dual Number Passport Roaming SIMs can be purchased at www.telestial.com for $29 USD, which includes a $10 USD calling credit.

HTC Touch Pro, Samsung Omnia and others confirmed for Verizon, pics leaked

Two of this year’s nicest mobile devices, HTC Touch Pro and Samsung Omnia, are now confirmed for an upcoming release via Verizon Wireless, the giant CDMA US carrier.
Phone Arena has it that Verizon will launch both said handsets sometime in November, thus offering its customers early Christmas gifts.
After being officially announced by Sprint, HTC Touch Pro is now making its way to Verizon too. The handset will apparently be called Verizon Wireless XV6850 and it should replace the old XV6800.
There’s now word yet on how much the Touch Pro / Verizon Wireless XV6850 costs, but since Sprint sells it for $299 with a contract agreement, Verizon will probably offer it for a similar price.
Here is how Touch Pro from Verizon should look like:
Its features will include, besides the full QWERTY keyboard:
Verizon’s Samsung Omnia will be a nice alternative to any other full-touch phone out there in the US. The handset will come as the CDMA version of the GSM one, and its features should not differ too much from the ones found in the latter.
So, expect to find the following in the CDMA Omnia:
-
Accelerometer
-
Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro
-
GPS
-
Wi-Fi
-
5 MP camera with autofocus
-
8GB of internal memory
HTC Touch Pro and Samsung Omnia surely represent great news for Verizon’s customers, but there’s even more: Verizon will also launch Samsung Saga i770 and Samsung Renown SCH-U810.
The Saga i770 is a Verizon version of AT&T’s Samsung Epix and it will look like this:
The specs of Samsung Saga i770 probably include:
-
A 2.55 inches touchscreen display with 320 x 320 pixels
-
WinMo 6.1 Pro
-
QWERTY keyboard
-
Wi-Fi
-
A-GPS
-
2 MP camera
And finally, Samsung Renown SCH-U810 is a global clamshell that works on CDMA and GSM (quad band) frequencies.
The features of Samsung Renown SCH-U810 include:
-
2 MP camera
-
Stereo Bluetooth
-
Visual Voice Mail
-
MicroSD cards support
Both Samsung Saga and Samsung Renown should be offered by Verizon at about the same time as Omnia and Touch Pro, hence starting November.
