N ot so long ago, LG was mainly known because of their consumer Electronics such as refrigerators and television screens. LG are slowly increasing their popularity on the mobile phone market and are gradually conquering a market share. In particular the KG800 was LG’s successful model; with its touchscreen, instead of physical buttons, as a novelty for operating the menu. What’s obvious about LG phones is the importance of the design. LG cell phones are known to look neat, and LG recently joined forces with Prada, resulting in the LG Prada, to make people that are interested in style, go for LG too.
First impression with the LG KF600 phone
The LG KF600 comes in a compact box. The main functions of the cell phone are visible on the box with a subtle display of a musical note, a radio and a camera. Furthermore, the box is matte black with a magnetic cover. You’ll find the following products standard in the box: a battery charger, a headset, a data cable and a user’s guide with a small software CD. The LG KF600 mobile phone has a shiny black front with dual screens. A common TFT monitor with below it a small touchscreen. The buttons are not visible at first, they appear once you slide open the device. In addition, on the side of the mobile phone, the volume buttons are found to adjust the volume, as well as two short keys for the MP3 player and the camera.
LG KF600 cell phone features a dual screen
A feature on the LG KF600 that stands out and that is pointed out in LG’s communication about this cell phone is the Dual-screen. As mentioned before, a small touchscreen is found below the common TFT screen, which displays selection possibilities for the menu you’re in, and these vary per menu item. You will standard find a number of quick buttons here; the menu button is one of them. If you want to take a picture these buttons will change and you can choose from settings, capture, back and sun, to adjust the contrast. The second screen makes the device truly more user-friendly, although the touchscreen sometimes takes its time to respond. Especially when you scroll through the menu quickly or if you select a function from the bottom row, you will notice that the screen can’t keep up with your speed. Using the normal number keys, however, will solve the problem. Furthermore the screen is shiny which makes it a tad harder to read the screen while outdoors in broad daylight.
Menu of the LG KF600
When you slide open the LG KF600 both screens will light up. The small touchscreen displays six pictograms: the menu button with quick buttons for messages, the phonebook, the calendar, sounds and one to deactivate the touchscreen. The menu itself offers a choice from some nine icons directing to the associated functions. To enable scrolling through the menu you use the arrows that are displayed on the touchscreen at that moment. The touchscreen shows different icons all the time to select functions. When you take a picture the icons are placed horizontally which means you can hold the mobile phone in a way similar to a regular digital camera. The menu is easy to operate, thanks to the touch buttons that adapt to the menu. I had to get used to the idea of a Dual-screen, certainly at first. And since you touch the icons on the touchscreen, you may find yourself tempted every now and then to try and touch them on the common, non-touchable TFT screen only to find out that it doesn’t work!
3 Megapixel digital camera
The integrated digital camera in the LG KF600 offers 3.0 Megapixels of resolution. Furthermore, the LG KF600 features flash and auto focus functions. The settings for the camera are somewhat restricted, besides a self-timer and multi-shot, the only relevant options for the camera are the resolution, quality and colour effects (sepia, black&white and negative). When you take a picture with the LG KF600, the captured picture remains visible on the screen. In order to take the next picture, the application has to start all over again. That is why it’s not possible to shoot sequentially, and that might be very annoying at times. The picture quality of the LG KF600 is reasonable. Occasionally the colours aren’t bright enough which makes it look like you have made a picture of a picture. To prevent blurred pictures you can select ‘reduce jitter’ in the settings menu. This option allows for taking a clear picture when the camera moves slightly. It’s a positive feature in itself if it weren’t for the electronic stabilization that requires a higher ISO sensitivity thus causing more noise in the photos.
Reviewing photos
T he LG KF600 has not been equipped with an optical zoom which means that (digital) zooming in is carried out at the cost of the quality. You might as well zoom in afterwards on your computer. The screen is a tad too small to display the pictures properly. This goes for shooting and reviewing the pictures. When viewing the pictures it takes too long for a picture to load on the screen, from the internal as well as the external memory. The picture appears hesitantly in five parts. What is nice though is the fact that when you zoom in, you will see the entire picture. A frame appears on the touchscreen that displays the part that is shown on the general screen. You can move the frame with your finger to have a detailed look on other areas of your picture, and zoom in further which reduces the size of the frame on the touchscreen. LG certainly make great use of the dual screen this way!
