Apple claims iPhone is a “gaming console” and “console experience”

Apple owns the iPhone, so they can pretty much say whatever they want to say about it. They say that the iPhone 3G is twice as fast, at half the price of the original, but we all know the truth. That it’s only barely faster most of the time, and actually more expensive in the long run.
Apple also considers the iPhone as a smartphone, and constantly tries to push the device as such, even though glaring deficiencies such as its inability to multi-task and lack of copy/paste bog it down in the face of true competition, especially those from Nokia’s Nseries and RIM’s BlackBerry.

And just recently, at a talk held in San Jose about the iPhone platform by Apple, Director of Technology Evangelism John Geleynse dropped a few serious bombs, saying that the iPhone is a “gaming console” and claiming that it’s not just a phone, but a “console experience.”
Having experienced iPhone gaming myself, I can say that there is some truth to this. But the iPhone platform has a long way to go before it can be considered as a viable mobile gaming platform. Aside from initial user complaints about the lack of buttons, Apple faces the arduous task proving the iPhone’s worth as a gaming device while updating it to provide many other features that it currently lacks.
But knowing Apple, they’ll still probably stick to their words as always, and just work to update things in the background, finally delivering in an upgraded version or follow-up model, like they always do.
