HTC Touch Dual

HTC+Touch+Dual HTC Touch Dual
HTC Touch Dual. This is now a 3.5G device with high-speed data, UMTS (i.e. 3G), EDGE and GPRS connectivity – this is certainly something the old model needed. HTC have also included a slide-out keypad that comes in two variants – a 16 key “conventional” number pad or a 20 key hybrid QWERTY/number pad similar to the layout of the BlackBerry Pearl. In our view the standard number pad adds very little to the HTC Touch Dual, and the 20 key pad will be more useful. It’s not clear which carriers will be offering what versions of the Touch Dual, however. We very much wanted to say that the HTC Touch Dual was an improved version of the Touch – but there are a couple of catches. The first problem is that the Touch Dual has ditched , a feature that the original Touch had. And then the screen has shrunk to a 2.6″ panel from a 2.8″ one – that might not sound like much but that will be quite noticeable if you put the two versions side-by-side. Despite this, the HTC Touch Dual is slightly heavier than the original Touch, probably mainly due to the keypad.
HTC’s TouchFLO interface has been praised for its ease of use, but really it’s just an add-on to the existing Windows Mobile 6 operating system, unlike the which was designed for “finger use” from the ground up. Still, it’s much easier to use than the standard operating system by itself. Windows Mobile 6 Professional is a pretty familiar operating system so we won’t dwell on that.Other features on the HTC Touch Dual are a 2 megapixel primary camera, a secondary camera for video calling, microSD expandable memory to add to the 256MB of internal memory, and 2.0. The sharp-eyed amongst you will spot that the publicity photos actually say Touch Slide rather than Touch Dual due to a late rename of the product (Touch Slide does sound a little confusing) – the production models will be labelled Touch Dual.

Despite our reservations, the HTC Touch Dual seems to be a pretty good device, just perhaps not quite the killer that we were hoping for. Still, if 3G and 3.5G are more important to you than , then this is certainly a device worth considering.

HTC say that the Touch Dual will be available on Orange in Europe from October onwards, with other carriers following later.

7 Samsung i7110
The Samsung i7110 is a 3.5G device with a receiver, a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash, a multimedia player, microSD expandable memory (up to 16GB) and an . The i7110 also features a 240 x 320 pixel OLED screen capable of displaying up to 262,000 colours.

At a guess, the Symbian implementation will be similar to the one on the excellent Samsung i8510, but the itself is much more conventional to look at, and it measures 118 x 52 x 13mm which is a bit more pocket friendly than some similar .

We understand that the i7110 will be launched by Samsung at the Symbian Show in London on the 21st to the 22nd October when hopefully we can give you some more details. The market availability of the i7110 might be a bit limited, but it does look like an interesting choice for people who want a more traditional Symbian capable device. It hasn’t yet been officially announced, but some details of the Samsung i7110 have been let slip by Samsung along with a low-resolution picture (below) that give a good idea about the successor to the Samsung i550 Symbian . Although we don’t have the full details, we do have enough for a mockup (pictured right) along with a pretty decent set of technical specifications.

Safaricom launches 3G coverage

430109 200px petronas svg Safaricom launches 3G coverageSo here is some news of a 3G that is a little farther afield than normal….

Kenya’s largest mobile operator, Safaricom has launched its 3G network commercially. Subscribers will apparently have access to 3.5G at up to 7.2Mbps. The 3G tech will become available in Nairobi first, and then be rolled out further over the next year. Safaricom ran trials in 2006, and won it’s licence in 2007.

As is often the case with new tech, the targeting of the new services will be at corporate and SME customers – both from the perspective of , and also the now ubiquitous 3G-USB modems.

It’s good to see that the wonder of 3G pervades almost entirely across the globe – I wonder where it will go live next…..?
