Just as we had reported earlier, Fido now has a new look and a whole new set of rate plans designed to make itself more accessible to those who are watching their budgets.

System access fees are out the door and in are the low-priced $15/month ‘all-in’ plans. There are also unlimited text plans available that kick things off at $25/month. Current Fido subscribers need not worry as they can opt to still continue their existing plans.

As for their handset line-up, they got a decent selection of phones that are virtually free on a 2-yr plan, but if you fancy something a bit more high-end, they also carry the Samsung Jack and the 3G iPhone. It’s a good mix of devices that will appeal to a wide range of customers. Not as diverse as what the other veteran discount carriers in Canada are offering, but good enough just the same.

Will the new Fido become the new success story in the Canadian telecom industry? Only time will tell.
‘New’ Fido celebrates the wireless customer and gives low prices a good home

TORONTO, Nov. 4 /CNW/ – Fido, Canada’s fourth largest wireless carrier, today re-launched its services with new branding, a suite of high-value low-price plans and an exclusive customer ‘owner’s guarantee’. The new Fido brings more simplicity and predictability to Canadians’ monthly wireless costs while offering low prices, market-leading customer care, and preferred capabilities for consumers to master their wireless destiny.
“For 12 years, Fido’s been passionate about changing to meet Canadians’
wireless needs,” said Sylvain Roy, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Fido. “Especially in these challenging economic times, Canadians want the best value in the wireless marketplace, so we’re excited to unleash the new Fido with discount pricing, continued excellence in customer service, and a market-leading ‘owner’s guarantee’.”
Fido’s exclusive ‘owner’s guarantee’ provides wireless customers the services they want to control their monthly wireless bills. This includes low prices, usage alerts, easy price plan switching, and the choice to have no term contract, along with the industry-leading benefits of FidoRewards.
The new Fido branding, logo and tagline deliver a strong visual identity while retaining the brand name, the dog imagery and the long-standing Fido attributes of loyalty, straightforwardness and trust. The taglines ‘giving low prices a good home’ and ‘les bons prix font les bons amis’ reflect Fido’s commitment to deliver discount prices while providing the most caring customer service in Canada.
Beginning November 4, 2008, customers can choose from a suite of Fido’s new straightforward ‘all-in’ price plans, from $15 per month, including plans with unlimited text messages that start at $25 per month. Existing Fido customers can also continue to enjoy their current plan with the benefits of great customer service and FidoRewards. For more information, visit www.fido.ca.

    About FIDO

Fido gives low prices a good home by offering Canadian consumers simple, high-value low-price wireless voice and data products and services with excellent customer care. Operating on the global standard GSM and HSPA technology platforms, Fido customers can roam in over 200 countries/areas. The Telstra T165i is a 3G phone made exclusively for the Australian Telstra network by ZTE. The T165i demonstrates a completely different approach to mobile phone design from most mainstream handsets, and with good reason.

Australia is a huge country, and most of it is very sparsely populated. Mobile phone coverage in rural areas is not great, but Telstra tries very hard to make sure that as many consumers as possible can get access to its “Next G” UMTS 3G service. The Telstra T165i is specifically designed to be used outside of regional centres and towns, and one immediately obvious feature is the large extendable antenna which helps the T165i to pick up a 3G signal.

The Telstra “Next G” network replaced their old 850 MHz CDMA network, and one of the conditions set by the Australian government to allow the changeover was that the new 3G network should have as wide a coverage as possible. One result of this is the Telsda T165i, created as a result of these special market conditions.

Telstra T165i If you find that the standard antenna doesn’t quite give good enough reception, then the T165i can be connected to an external antenna via a patch lead or a car kit. It seems strange to think that you might want to use a mobile phone with a fixed antenna on a building, but you can. Part of the reason for this is that the Next G network can also be used as a relatively high-speed way to access the internet in areas “normal broadband” cannot reach.

Underneath the chunky exterior, the Telstra T165i has a 2″ 240 x 320 pixel anti-glare display, a 2 megapixel camera with autofocus, A-GPS plus Whereis maps, an FM radio, MP3 player, basic web browser and an email client. Of course, the T165i also has Bluetooth and microSD expandable memory.
Telstra say that the T165i measures 117 x 51 x 16mm which makes it a little larger than a standard phone.. what they don’t tell you is that this excludes the antenna stub which makes it around 139mm tall, which is very large indeed. Talktime is around 3.5 hours with up to 10 days standby time.

It isn’t an attractive phone, but in terms of looks perhaps the best word we can find is “purposeful”. The T165i is clearly designed to do a job, and from the reports that we have seen it does this very well. Perhaps it would be nice to see phones like this being more widely available, because people in other countries often have coverage problems.

The Telstra T165i is available now.
We haven’t seen too many concepts of late, but that doesn’t mean we don’t like to see what the creative minds envision the future of mobile to be. This latest mobile phone concept, the Eclipse Intuit, was dreamed up by Eddie Goh.

Goh sees a future filled with Windows Mobile devices powered by the oh-so-renewable energy source we call the “Sun.” It’s definitely interesting to see a concept powered by a currently available Windows Mobile platform, but we’d hope a device like this would be rocking some far-out mobile OS that hasn’t even been dreamed up yet.
The main attraction is portions of the device are covered in a chemical-based solar “skin” that helps top off the battery when burning decomposed plants and animals for electricity just isn’t convenient. But, like all good concepts, this little sucker features some seriously cool high-end features. There’s a 5 megapixel camera, built-in software to edit and upload pics to a photo album, and not one, but two full-body touchscreens. The main touchscreen serves as a display, while a second, slide-out touchscreen panel serves as a touch-sensitive keyboard with “tactile feedback” or a secondary touchscreen display, a la Nintendo DS.

We’ll give Goh the benefit of the doubt and assume that there’s real-deal, localized haptic feedback in his Eclipse Intuit – not the pseudo-haptic, whole-device vibrating feedback nonsense that we’ve been seeing on too many handsets recently. All in all it’s a cool concept, and it sure would be nice to see the biggest features cross over in to the real-world. But, as it’s a concept, we’ll probably never see the Eclipse Intuit hit market.
